About this artwork
The history of the Sicilian cart began in '700, when the only cars available were those of the landowners, elegantly decorated and well appointed. It is precisely these means of transport to suggest, a century later, to those who could not afford them, the idea of decorating the cart, which until then had been a simple working tool. The carts were in fact used by the “vurdunara”, mule drivers who worked in the service of the nobility to transport… agricultural products. With the development of the road network, the roads became more and more viable and the carts were also used for the transport of families during the weekends: it was enough to clean them and add a few planks of wood as seats. It was at this time, in the mid-800s, that the idea to emulate the cars of the nobility was born. Farmers' wagons became the pride of their owners, painted with vivid scenes
