History of Naive Art
We call naive art works of art made by people who are self-taught and do not have academic training. Naïve art dates back to prehistoric times, and naive painting has always existed in the shadow of recognized artists: there are many naive paintings in flea markets or private collections. This kind of naïve painting is mostly about portrait painting of individuals, genre scenes or landscape painting. Naïve painting has long been viewed with disdain because it did not correspond to the academic canon. It was not until the middle of the 19th century, under the influence of Romanticism, that we began to take an interest in popular art, created by anonymous people who decorated dishes, pottery and almanacs ... Most of the creators behind these naive works of art remain unknown but now attract the interest of recognized artists and collectors. We first start to hear talk of naïve painting in 1885, talking about the painter Henri Rousseau, who exhibited at the Paris Salon of independent artists, Douanier described his paintings as colorful naive work, very realistic and almost childlike. Today naive art has its place in the biggest museums and is very popular with many collectors.
