About this artwork
I made a series called 'Microkosmos' on very small canvases (about 6 or 7 cm square). On these small canvases I placed insects in a setting of the universe.
Gigantic and minuscule
Small animals that take center stage on small canvases to be highlighted in a grand manner. Among those insects are some of my favourite animals, like this one, the blue-black carpenter bee. A bee, at least as large as our largest bumblebees, which you mainly find in… Southern Europe. A beautiful animal that is actually too heavy to fly, but it can. A miracle.
I thought it would be nice to give those small animals space in the universe, set against a star or planet. This makes the insect looks gigantic, and the universe minuscule. The combination of insect and universe in one image gives a hint to surrealism, the movement I followed when I started painting a long time ago.
Anne-Tjerk Mante, a Royal Academy of Fine Arts alumnus, is a painter who primarily utilizes oil and acrylic. His technique varies between expressive and touches of surrealism, with a profound fascination with the universe, light, and natural scenery. His stirring creations radiate an aspiration to embody beauty, often invoking a sense of exploration and serene wonder.
