About this artwork
In this work I have translated the fleeting moments and blurred memories of a coastal town - here Helgoland - into vibrant colours and layered textures. The use of acrylic, collage - also nautical charts, charcoal and sand allows me to capture the raw, impetuous nature of the sea and the stillness of the architectural forms.
Lobster huts - that's what these former sheds or workshops of the fishermen on Heligoland are called. The splendidly colorful… houses inspired me.
In nature, the booths are rather colorful, here in the factory it is the background and the sea in front of it. The colors seem to be in competition: here cadmium yellow and orange (Indian yellow), there turquoise green and ultramarine blue. But burnt sienna - the color of the rocks and the ground of Heligoland - is also used.
This painting radiates a dynamic energy that can enliven any room, giving it a story and character that invites reflection and dreaming.
Annette G. Rathjen is a versatile artist with a background in photography, painting, and printmaking. She works with a mixture of painting, collage, and drawing, layering elements upon elements. She uses acrylic paints, charcoal, chalk, but also sand, coffee grounds, marble dust, ash, and sometimes old nautical charts. This creates a tension: lines and colors assert themselves, are covered over. Something new breaks through, something old remains visible. It's like a conversation on the canvas—sometimes a dialogue, sometimes an argument.
The result is images that reveal both structure and movement. They are not linear narratives, but fragments, superimpositions that challenge us; inviting us to let go of our perception, not to stop at the first step, but to inspire us as viewers and invite our own interpretation. Her works are exhibited in France, Austria, Italy, and the USA.
