About this artwork
Deserts have fascinated me for years, and I've had the opportunity to experience the Namib Desert and parts of the Sahara, having worked for several years in the Sahel, on the edge of the desert. Therefore, the special atmosphere, the light, the smell, the crunch of the sand beneath my feet, are very familiar to me. I'm trying to capture this fascination with a small series. Annette G. Rathjen is a versatile artist with a background in photography, painting, and printmaking. She works with a mixture of painting, collage, and drawing, layering elements upon elements. She uses acrylic paints, charcoal, chalk, but also sand, coffee grounds, marble dust, ash, and sometimes old nautical charts.
