About this artwork
She has to be quiet. If she asks questions, we tell her she's too young, that she wouldn't understand. We don't want to explain anything to her. If she talks back, she gets in trouble. She's not allowed to teach us, correct us, or give us her opinion. We are the authority, and she has to obey us. She has to respect and admire us. We don't see why respect should be earned. And it's this behavior of adults that I criticize through my work.
This work… is the 12th painting in the Honest Children series.
Here I used a spatula technique to create a more striking impression.
Children are like compressed universes to me.
When I look at my children,
I see the whole world in their faces.
The world with all its wonderful aspects, but also its doubts,
the challenges and also the terrible aspects.
Therefore, it seems natural to me to paint them.
