About this artwork
As a female artist, I have been told my work is too loud, too sensual, too present. I have been told to tone it down, scale it down, cover it up. In spite of the closed doors on my artistic journey, my work continues to express the feminine energy inside of me, with my own distinct artistic voice. For this piece, I looked up women who have blazed trails in history, from the Suffragettes to Rosa Parks, from the women working in factories during world…
wars to Malala getting shot on her way to school. In the army of female warriors that started to emerge, I also wanted to portray the anonymous women that are victims of current wars, from Ukrainian soldiers to Palestinian women, as well as mothers flocking the border in hopes of a better life for their children. Lastly, I wanted to be in that painting, as an artist fighting for her own voice to be heard and recognized. This led me to paint Frida Khalo, who overcame pain by screaming her colorful existence until she could not be denied.
