About this artwork
A contemporary wildlife painting of a young Cape Zebra that the artist encountered in the Sutherland region north of Cape Town. The paint application is executed by means of palette knife onto a textured gesso background.
Here the artist took a minimalist approach and captures the youthfulness and feisty nature of the animal.
A palette of blue hues and tints offset against splashes of cadmium yellows and ochres brings this piece alive.
This painting… is suitable for a modern or traditional environment.

« I am inspired by beauty and the positive stories behind people's lives. My portraits strive to express the emotions behind people's eyes rather than creating a realistic rendering of the person. »
Anthony de Klerk is inspired by the people that he meets and interacts with, particularly African youths who have the ability to rise above challenging circumstances and conditions. The award-winning South African painter's first love was wildlife art, which he now finds himself returning to. In his creative process, De Klerk uses acrylic paints and gesso with palette knives and various scraping tools. In his larger portraits and nudes, he works with oils in a more traditional manner.
