About this artwork
In this painting done from life the artist uses a technique where he studies the light that falls on the model and uses a direct approach whereby he applies the pigment using a palette knife and undiluted acrylic paint mixed with gesso on a prepared canvas. In his own words: "When these works occur there is a certain magic in the air on the night and I simply get lost in the process becoming totally focussed on the model and the painting. The trick…
is to know just when to stop and realise that it is completed"

« I am inspired by beauty and the positive stories behind people's lives. My portraits strive to express the emotions behind people's eyes rather than creating a realistic rendering of the person. »
Anthony de Klerk is inspired by the people that he meets and interacts with, particularly African youths who have the ability to rise above challenging circumstances and conditions. The award-winning South African painter's first love was wildlife art, which he now finds himself returning to. In his creative process, De Klerk uses acrylic paints and gesso with palette knives and various scraping tools. In his larger portraits and nudes, he works with oils in a more traditional manner.
