About this artwork
If you like bold color, you'll love Nardis. This hard edge geometric piece features about fifteen tints, tones, and shades. The mild optical illusion of depth is also a treat for the eyes. Inspired by the Bill Evans/Miles Davis jazz composition of the same name, to which I was listening during a brainstorming session, here I've employed a specific linear construct I'd never used until I started this work. I was, as usual, pushing myself to try new…
approaches in my forming of illusions, and it occurred to me that I should attempt the impression of overlapping lines without actually overlapping them. Nardis is the result. By the way, legend has it that the name of that composition is a play on Bill Evans' New Jersey accent: when he said, "... I'm an artist," It sounded like, "I'm Nardis." Miles Davis wrote the tune and named it that, and Evans recorded it.
