About this artwork
This was an unplanned composition. I was inspired by a quote from the great Gene Davis, the hardedge/geometric abstract pioneer, in which he explained his improvisational approach: no color scheme or composition was planned; he grabbed whatever paint he had available and started, getting himself out of trouble as he went along. I had to try that for myself!
I didn't even look at the fine art markers as I grabbed them and started drawing my lines.… Even the white criss-crosses on top were placed randomly, without forethought. There is no intended optical illusion in this piece; it's more of a geometric/hardedge. It's like a jazz improv. It makes me think of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme."
I just had to trust my instincts, and it turned out great. I hope viewers of this work gain a little inspiration for themselves to trust their instincts too.
