In contrast to The Moment of Silence, La Clairière focuses on the reality of the facts through a place of memory, the Mont-Valérien shotgun glade. The pieces of dead wood depicting the posts on the canvas actually come from the tree in the foreground, "witness" alive and still present of these massacres. A priori, the place of memory remembers more than it commemorates. The physical place anchors the memory, it delivers a concrete material as a medium…
of the memory. But what is the point of this memory work that arises? The answer can only be personal. It connects us to the founding elements of our identity, to questions about our origins and about transmission. Wheat that stands represents new generations. Have they inherited the spirit of resistance? Did the comfort of the years of peace make them amnesic?
