About this artwork
“The human species, in its wonderful and varied operations, seems to prove itself in this world as a second nature"
Leonardo da Vinci
BL 151 v.
Starting from this quote in this painting I wanted to symbolically represent the genius of the human being in relation to nature. In the foreground the monumental bronze horse by Leonardo da Vinci, in the background the abandoned Falck steelworks but symbol of the industrial development of northern Italy.… In the background the Grigna and the Resegone, the monumental mountains north of Milan. So, Art - Science - Nature.
The dimensions of the composition are 100 cm X 160 cm (composed of two panels each of 80 cm X 100 cm joined by two hinges). On the left and right edges the phrase by Leonardo.
Antonio Ortolani, trained at NABA in Milan, expresses himself through oil painting with symbolist and surrealist influences. He develops an intriguing contrast between industrial architectural realism and nature, adding ancient fabrics and beeswax for a unique texture. With strong reference to poetic and philosophical texts, his works evoke the emotions of an almost forgotten era, exploring the duality between humility and pride.
