About this artwork
The Amazon is Franz von Stuck's most successful character. To this day, in front of his villa in Bogenhausen, there is a life-size bronze cast that Stuck had made as a summary of his engagement with the equestrian figure. The model for the spear-throwing rider was a certain Lydia Feez, the divorced wife of a captain, who also posed in front of other Munich artists. The Amazons were a legendary race of warrior women. Stuck gave form to both mythological… ideas in one work. The statuette was created during a period of upheaval in Munich art, when the turn to Art Nouveau became manifest in 1897. The figure was shown at the most important exhibitions at the turn of the century in both Munich and Vienna. With the idea of bringing this powerful woman back to life, I took various photographs of the statue in Munich in October 2019. First I gave the bronze figure color and lively eyes, then I painted it in oil.
