About this artwork
This painting represents a state of suspension, of surrender, of looking at the world from another perspective.
The figure is tied by one foot, like the Hanged Man in the tarot, but here there is no suffering: there is surrender, voluntary abandonment. His body merges with the folds of that yellow fabric, which seems like energy, thought, or soul unfolding.
The undulating lines that surround it suggest a world in motion, both internal and external.… Everything flows. There is no rigidity. The background is neither sky nor earth; it is an intermediate space, a place of transition and transformation.
And below, in the water, barely visible, is the silhouette of a man. Is it someone else? Or is it the reflection, the shadow, the soul of the one hanging above? Water, as in many myths, represents the unconscious. Perhaps that is where we must immerse ourselves to understand.
The Hanged Man is not being punished. He is seeing everything from a different perspective. Sometimes, to understand, it is not necessary to move forward, but to remain still... and turn your gaze inward.
