« By creating these worlds where I have existential authority, I challenge the perceptions of how and where my body is allowed to exist. »
Arit Etukudo is a photographer based in the United States whose works have been exhibited nationally and in England. Her works incorporate images of herself relating to divinity, religion, and authority as a way of negotiating herself into spaces that she is not welcomed in. As a queer black woman, Etukudo believes there is little acknowledgment of her existence in public and institutional spaces. She employs self-portraits as a way of retaliating against these spaces that have made her invisible.
