About this artwork
In the south of France, Aigues-Mortes was the only port of the Kingdom of France on the Mediterranean. It was from this port that Louis IX, known as Saint Louis, embarked twice for the Crusades to the Holy Land starting in 1248. The fortifications protected the city against the Spanish, the English, and the Barbary pirates.
The town borders the salt production ponds. The red color of the water in the foreground is due to microorganisms adapted… to high salt concentrations. These microorganisms are preyed upon by small animals, which in turn are preyed upon by the flamingos in the foreground, which owe their color to them.
