About this artwork
Prior to its current incarnation as the Lowes Philadelphia Hotel, this landmark International Style structure was originally built in 1929 for the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society I(PSFS). It was designed by the noted Philadelphia Architectural firm of George Howe & William Lescaze and opened in 1929. It has been called "the canonical International style Skyscraper of the period" by Architect and Author Robert A. M. Stern.
Standing at the… bottom of the original staircase in this modernist landmark, one looked upwards from beneath the ascending stairs - up towards the executive offices. The white stepped surface is actually the underside of the stair structure. The sharp line at the top of the polished black sides is the handrail. Remember that you are looking up from underneath the stairs. Look closely - past the allusion to an Escher print.
Unfortunately the stairs have now been renovated with these materials removed as shown in this now historic photograph.
Arthur Marcus is a photographer and architect whose work draws deeply from decades of architectural practice and immersive urban photography. He utilizes abstract framing, modernist influences, and masterful play of light and shadow to distill architecture and cityscapes into poetic, contemplative compositions. His photography technique emphasizes fragmenting the built environment, revealing hidden rhythms and a quiet, kinetic energy in everyday moments. Through his lens, Marcus conveys nostalgia, reflection and the complexity of modern urban life—inviting viewers to pause and discover the transformative beauty in ordinary scenes.
