About this artwork
The Suburban Train Tracks at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia exhibits an almost European architectural grandeur. The viewer is guided through spaces with an interplay of geometry, light and shadow towards the distant tracks. The dramatic contrasts evoke a sense of solitude and anticipation. The train platform was totally empty this moment since it was 2 degrees Fahrenheit outside and everyone else was standing in the heated waiting room behind… me. The absence of people transforms the station platform from a place of transit to a place of contemplation as this photograph finds poetry in the everyday. This station was designed by the Architect Paul Philippe Cret who graduated from the L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, France.
Arthur Marcus is a photographer and architect whose work draws deeply from decades of architectural practice and immersive urban photography. He utilizes abstract framing, modernist influences, and masterful play of light and shadow to distill architecture and cityscapes into poetic, contemplative compositions. His photography technique emphasizes fragmenting the built environment, revealing hidden rhythms and a quiet, kinetic energy in everyday moments. Through his lens, Marcus conveys nostalgia, reflection and the complexity of modern urban life—inviting viewers to pause and discover the transformative beauty in ordinary scenes.
