In a landscape of shadows, she has a body, a presence, a voice. She is a unique case in Rome: an independent and cultured young woman who insists on her right to love; a poet of whose life and feelings she speaks herself, with her own words, without masculine mediation.
Sulpicia lived in the golden age of Emperor Augustus. She was an exceptional woman for many reasons, the most important of which was that she belonged to that 1% of the Roman population… that today we classify as elite, located at the top of a harsh and hierarchical world. His mother was the sister of Marco Valerio Mesala Corvino, a powerful general and literary patron. In his uncle's mansion he met some of the most acclaimed positions of the time, such as Ovid or Tibulo. Favored by wealth and kinship, Sulpicia dared to write autobiographical poems as the only love verses written by a Roman woman from classical times that have come down to us.
