About this artwork
The smoking break as a moment of enjoyment and time out has gone out of fashion in the course of neoliberal optimization measures.
The smoking pause series portrays the smoker, once a symbol of the modern, emancipated woman. Smoking breaks are also a reminder of the great thinkers like Hannah Arendt or Herta Müller, who were heavy smokers.

« Based on the formal gesture of the concrete color stroke, I design portraits and scenes that, in different contexts, take the narrative account into account. »
Esslinger was at the beginning of her artistic career with textile, before she turned to painting. Her many travels and residency stays worldwide influence the cultural and sociopolitical issues that Esslinger deals with in her art. She also works with cardboard collages that critically question consumption.
