It ties in with the type of antihero that has a firm place in pop culture. The idea of stealing the day raises the question of who owns the time. The demand to shape one's own lifetime freely seems frivolous in the trend towards rationalization and optimization.

Esslinger was at the beginning of her artistic career with textile, before she turned to painting. Her many travels and residency stays worldwide influence the cultural and sociopolitical issues that Esslinger deals with in her art. She also works with cardboard collages that critically question consumption.
