About this artwork
In this artwork we see a woman lost in thought. She stares into the distance. We don't know what's going on in her. She is wearing a summer dress and something with butterflies in her hair. Vlasman built the portrait, like all her other work, from many pieces of paper. It looks bright and colorful, but the look on her face does not correspond with that.

« By using many layers of paper I reveal what is inside: human insecurity and the inability to understand the world. »
Astrid Vlasman is an artist based in the Netherlands whose paintings have been featured in solo exhibitions nationally and in Serbia. She describes her distinctive figurative works as being about people and the spaces they inhabit, or have just left. Most often, Vlasman's characters are set in uncomfortable positions and unsure of what to do. She primarily creates using oils and collage on canvas.
