About this artwork
Academic painter Marjan Skumavc (1947-2011) loved the sea. He preferred to observe it from the shore. He used to say that this was where he could hear the sea best. On the coast, the sea breathes, foams, strikes, retreats, and returns again.
In this painting, he observed the reefs that the waves could not move. They only covered them, polished them, flooded them with white foam, and hid them from view for a moment. But the reefs remained there. Hard,… wounded, solitary, and enduring.
A wave is gentle only from a distance. When it strikes a stone, it reveals its strength. When it breaks, it becomes foam, almost breath.
These reefs are not merely stones in the sea. They are images of everything that endures. Of everything that allows itself to be grazed, wounded, covered, yet does not disappear. Every day, the sea attacks them anew and embraces them anew.
Atelje MS is a small Slovenian gallery rooted in the legacy of academic painter Marjan Skumavc. It presents selected painters from our region, contemporary painting, and works by important artists of the post-war generation. At the heart of its selection are the human figure, landscape, the artist’s inner world, and a sensitivity to overlooked stories. The gallery is especially shaped by Skumavc’s expressiveness and his empathy for the ordinary person. We mainly present paintings on canvas, most often in acrylic, watercolor, and oil, and more occasionally sculptures. We believe that a painting is not merely an object on a wall, but a space for encounter, emotion, and quiet dialogue.
