About this artwork
This painting I painted in early spring at a friend’s place, when the plums were in bloom. I loved the contrast of the white blossoms against the dark shadows beneath them and the twisting, twirling branches. There was something so magical, so magnificent about it — the beauty of spring arriving, the trees covered in tiny white flowers. I think it is one of the most magical moments in life, in all the turning of the seasons. It is as if every tree…
suddenly carries a white halo, glowing in the light. It feels like a miracle, a symbol of a new beginning, of new life. Winter has been overcome, and the air is full of the sound of bees, their soft humming weaving through the blossoms. It is pure magic — like bathing in happiness, in the joy and renewing energy of spring. When I look at this painting now, it brings me back to that day, and it almost feels as if I can smell the blooming plums — the soft, delicate petals and the freshness of that spring air.
