About this artwork
This painting is reflective of our culture. How we are obsessed with documenting our daily activities no matter how mundane, taking selfies and posing to show our most pleasing images of our selves. Subsequently we are focused on the superficial and perhaps missing the experiences that we're actually in - trying to capture the moment on camera, rather then being within yourself and enjoying the moment. When we only see snapshots of people and their…
lives, we perceive a very idealistic view - a misconceived reality.

« My piece is only finished when I have adhered several layers, otherwise, it feels too one dimensional. By distressing the work it somehow has a connection to the past. »
Audry Kalman is a Canadian painter whose work fluctuates between abstract and representational images. Her most recent works focus on the concept of connection and how people relate to each other through social media. Kalman's art has previously been influenced by artifacts from her childhood, as well as fertility figures. She peels away layers, combining wax, acrylics, and oil sticks, which achieves a rich tactile effect.
