A multi-layered, expansive work. At the center is an altarpiece. A vague outline of the injured Jesus Christ on the cross. Blood running down it. Miniature depictions of the crucifixion scene by Michelangelo and others. At the same time, this expansive scenario depicts a paper or cardboard kite, which, however, cannot fly and never could, contrary to all the promises made to us as children thrown into the world. May this dream come true one day!… On the back of the altarpiece (when opened), a famous illustration becomes visible: Benjamin Franklin attempting to direct lightning into a bottle (the invention of the lightning rod). A QR code is visible on the other altarpiece. This leads to an audio file. Schumann's Ghost Symphony, the last of his musical compositions before he went into the water, can be heard.
Axel Schäffler, a versatile artist from Hamburg, uses painting, photography, video and installation. His styles and techniques vary from meticulously planned to random, using oil and acrylic paints, colored pencils, ink blots and reworked inkjet prints. In his works, childhood memories, fairytale fantasies, fears and joys flow together in a kaleidoscopic interplay.
