About this artwork
The city of Gabala is situated in one of the most beautiful natural sceneries in Azerbaijan.
John Ruskin wrote that Mountains are the beginning and the end of all-natural scenery’ (in Modern Painters, 1856, Volume IV). The mountains of the Caucasus are the perpetual companions of this region and form a great part of its geological richness and are intimately connected with the identity of the landscape. The green vegetation on the river banks contrasting… with the yellow droughty mountain tops in the summer.
I used the expressive power of colour to convey that sense of volume and natural contrast.
Aylal Heydarova, a painter and sculptor from Baku, Azerbaijan, with advanced training in Theatre Décor & Design and a Master’s from the University of Leeds, uses her multicultural roots as fertile ground for her art. Her technique blends pointillism, abstraction, and modernism, employing vivid color, symbolic imagery, and layered textures across both canvas and sculpture. She seeks to ignite empathy and reflection, conveying a powerful sense of collective memory, hope, and the emotional complexity of nature and humanity’s shared journey.
