About this artwork
A multi-layered construction of acrylic, pastel, charcoal, and collage creates a visual depth that is further enhanced by the final blue color. The circular cutouts act as windows into the image's history. The imperfect forms and incisions reflect the process of creation. This work explores the breaking down of structures. Countless layers are concealed beneath the uppermost deep blue layer. The circular forms are not perfect circles; sometimes they… resemble microorganisms, like organic fragments. They could also be openings that reveal glimpses of the past and what lies beneath. The surface is irregular, almost tactile, and reveals something about the individual stages of the work.
Bärbel Thürer is a painter, draftsman, and printmaker with extensive training at the Freiburg Academy of Fine Arts, supplemented by courses in Leipzig. She experimentally works in large and small formats on canvas, wood, and paper, utilizing collage, printmaking techniques, and layered surfaces of color and form for abstraction. Her works convey intense, multifaceted emotions and make invisible inner states visible—they invite the viewer to explore the unknown without fear.
