About this artwork
“Altybakan” depicts a traditional element of Kazakh culture that has long been associated with youth, celebration, and community gatherings in the open steppe. The scene reflects moments of shared joy and connection, where social life and cultural traditions intertwine.
In this work I was interested not only in representing a cultural practice, but also in capturing the atmosphere surrounding it — the feeling of openness, movement, and the collective… memory carried through generations. The figures become part of a larger narrative about identity and belonging within the landscape of the steppe.
Through figurative composition and expressive color, the painting seeks to evoke both a sense of nostalgia and the continuing presence of tradition in contemporary life. “Altybakan” therefore becomes a reflection on how cultural memory survives through lived experience and communal rituals.
Bagzhan Alikhanov is a painter trained at the Kazakh National University of Arts, working primarily with oils and acrylics while deeply rooted in Kazakh and international art circles. His style fuses symbolism, expressionism, and realism—blending emotive lines, dramatic lighting, and symbolic imagery to explore psychological depth and cultural identity. Through his art, he channels inner conflict, passion, and heritage, offering viewers a profoundly personal yet universally resonant emotional experience.
