About this artwork
There is nothing so serene as watching a waterfall. There is a constant play of light and movement and the cooling spray! To meditate by a waterfall and capture that calmness of relaxing in nature is what the artist is doing with this piece. She takes photos of waterfalls and writes haiku poems out in nature. When she returns to the studio she prints the chosen photo on thin kozo paper using an Epson 7880 professional inkjet printer with archival…
pigment based inks. She uses this photo and her memory of the place as inspiration to create an intuitive watercolor painting on even thinner mulberry paper. Each piece of paper is infused with encaustic wax. The the papers are cut into strips and woven together. The finished weaving is mounted onto a painting panel prepared with additional encaustic medium and beeswax. The piece is signed on the back and the haiku written for this piece is included on the back.

Established American artist Barbara Hocker's was mesmerised by color and photography from a young age. The Japanese aesthetic concept of 'Wabi Sabi' is a key theme in her artworks, the notion that hope and loss always dance together and that everything is impermanent, imperfect and in constant flux is central to this dogma. Explorations of water, pattern and liminal space her mixed media artworks are emotive and textured to meditative effect.
