About this artwork
The article in the NYT's "N.B.A. Rookies on Their Draft Night Outfits" inspired this painting. Cody Williams in his suit, shades and beads were fun to paint. Williams was selected with the tenth overall pick by the Utah Jazz in the 2024 NBA Draft and prior to that played in college for the University of Colorado.
Barbara Shelly, a self-taught mixed media artist, traded her dance shoes for a paintbrush. Utilizing techniques of tearing newspapers and magazines, she skillfully layers textured collages underneath vivid swathes of acrylic paint. Shelly's work delves into current events, reflecting compelling narratives in performing arts and politics, unabashedly inspired by the vigor of passionate individuals. Her art vivifies humanity, leaving room for personal interpretation and boldly expressing societal nuances.
