About this artwork
Xiphactinus (higher classification Ichthyodectidae) lived during the Late Cretaceous Period 90 - 65 million years ago. It was a predatory fish weighing approximately 1000 pounds and measured 20 ft long. Davies chose this fossil to replicate in a relief carving because of the level of detail offered in the original. Look very closely and you can just make out its last meal - another fish skeleton within it. Modelled in herculite this relief sculpture…

Barry Davies is a passionate British sculptor who has exhibited his work across Europe and the UK. He seeks to humbly represent the anatomy of natural history in all its forms, aiming to convey excellence through his elegant bronze sculptures. Modelled in clay and carved in plaster before being cast in bronze, his subject matter derives from studies of Palaeontology, Anthropology and human and animal anatomy.
