About this artwork
This work is inspired by someone I once loved deeply — my ex-girlfriend. As a child, she was bullied relentlessly. She learned to stay small, to disappear in plain sight, to hide her emotions just to make it through the day.
That pain never really left her. It followed her into adulthood, and into our relationship. And in ways we couldn't always name, it stood between us.
“Invisible Is Safer” captures that haunting silence. The inner voice that… says: “Don’t speak. Don’t feel. Don’t be seen.”
The chaos of a classroom full of laughter, where one quiet soul is slowly unraveling. The forced normalcy, the isolation, the shame.
Bullying leaves scars — deep ones, often hidden. This piece is my way of honoring her story, and shining a light on a struggle too many carry in silence.
For those who were told to shrink. And for those finally learning to take up space.
Bart Hamelink, a self-taught Dutch artist, crafts stories using acrylics, ink, and markers. His style meshes raw, expressive lines with cartoonish figures, presenting bold colors in stark relief with striking textual elements. Throughout this playfully honest artistry, Hamelink explores the prismatic spectrum of human emotions, social struggles, and the beauty in vulnerability. His pieces, imbued with both humor and poignancy, coax viewers into experiencing resonance, reflection, and a distinctive edge of discomfort.
