About this artwork
This painting by Bernadette Maria Roolf unfolds a surreal scene with stylized figures in a dynamic composition. At its center are a male and a female figure surrounded by grotesque shapes, some intertwined with them. A floating figure holds the ribbon of a red balloon, while another, smaller figure catches it. What does it all mean? While the texture of the background creates a deep, almost mystical atmosphere, the expressive faces and concise forms…
lend the work a haunting presence.
