About this artwork
Bronze patinated using the lost wax technique.
I had the idea for this character in 1998 but the bronze production is recent. This unique piece is inspired by the OLD SOLDIER of 1999 but has very different characteristics: the head support is crenellated and resembles the towers of a ruined fortress; the helmet is topped with an ornament in the shape of a sharp tool which, in my opinion, represents the shell fragment that hit my father's helmet… during the 2nd World War.
For me, this sculpture is not linked to history but to very present current threats. It is a cry of anger against all the wars and violence that permanently threaten the balance of the planet.
The madness of the leaders is not a thing of the past. They are the ones who are currently destroying the happiness of humanity. It is necessary to prevent them from doing harm.
This old soldier is only a shadow of himself. The same fate could befall us.

« I am looking for a work that will surpass the previous ones while being able to suggest an array of emotions and stay alive despite the action of time. »
Bernard Métranve is an award-winning French sculptor who has exhibited in Belgium, Luxembourg and France. Métranve works are now abstract, but what links the different methods, techniques and themes explored throughout his artistic career is the search for harmony and the purity of lines. His bronze works begin with modelling the piece in clay, from which he then makes a wax impression that is sent to a foundry. Lastly, he controls the cast iron, carving and patina of the composition.
