About this artwork
Every true Cologne resident knows the chimpanzee Petermann and his story. As a child, I was fascinated by Petermann. He could ride a scooter and eat with a knife and fork. Back then, I always thought that apes were simply another kind of human. And indeed, Petermann ended up like many celebrities.

Bernd Vogel is a photographer, sculptor, painter, and digital artist trained under Jürgen Klauke at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and Rolf Lieberknecht. His abstract-figurative, amateurish technique deliberately plays with the contrast between unprofessionalism, playfulness, and traditional forms. In his works, he explores the aesthetics of absence and intentionally leads the viewer down false paths with a deliberate openness to interpretation. His art reveals a tongue-in-cheek distrust of logic and evokes a liberating lightness that encourages the questioning of apparent certainties.
