About this artwork
"Light on the Land" is the name given to the landscape series that helped define the style prior to the four "solapintura" cycles. Drawing from the foundations of classical modernism, beginning with De Goya and Michelangelo, and continuing with Lyonell Feininger and Hopper, they form the foundations of a distinct Neo-Renaissance. The genre can therefore be assessed in retrospect. In retrospect, a perspective opens up before us on a host of artists… who sought to understand light as a central medium. Thus, we look back through Feininger's light spectra and color palettes and recognize the enigmatic prismatics of Chagall's paintings. Here we begin to pick up the thread from which the "The Bride" cycle is woven.
Bernhard Maria Moehnle is a German-born and trained painter who, after his experience in stage design and animation, devoted himself entirely to painting ("solapintura"). He develops a unique visual language for each series of paintings, combining classical modernism with artists such as Rembrandt, Chagall, and Max Ernst, thus creating a distinctive neo-Renaissance style. His works convey profoundly emotional messages of Christianity and touch the viewer with their symbolic clarity, spiritual depth, and expressive power.
