« I’m not at all restricted anymore by elements as the size of the cloth or the paint or the material I’m using. I’m in the painting: that is my universe and that universe is unbounded. »
Bilal Chahal (b. 1978, Tripoli, Lebanon) is a Lebanese-Dutch contemporary artist based in Amsterdam. Working across painting, installation, sculpture, photography, and mixed media, he explores themes of memory, time, identity, and belonging. Having lived between Lebanon, Curaçao, and the Netherlands, his multicultural background profoundly informs his artistic practice. Through layered compositions and recurring motifs such as the chair, Chahal investigates the relationship between personal history and collective experience. His recent body of work, Chronos & Kairos, reflects on the tension between chronological time and meaningful moments, transforming memory into powerful visual narratives. Chahal's work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Amsterdam Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in Bogotá, and is held in public and private collections. His work invites viewers to reflect on the emotional and psychological landscapes that shape the human experience.
