As another artist in my series featuring special living and deceased artists, I've created a portrait of Amy Winehouse in charcoal and lead against a white, textured oil background. The textured background was intended to create a kind of white wall, into which Amy had scratched her signature, "Love Amy," and a heart. She later traced these lines with pink lipstick, which appears to have bled in a few places.
Did the rain perhaps play its part here,… washing away the inscription? But since Amy carved her dedication into the wall, it remains as a memento of her. Thus, it's certainly an interesting image for any Amy Winehouse fan and music lover. That's why I photographed it in situ in my private music studio next to a Stratocaster and other equipment. It would be wonderful if it found a suitable home.
Birger Dicke uses oil paint, watercolor, pencil, graphite, and pastel; his passion for Old Masters and his self-study shape his approach. He combines the classic Flemish multi-layer technique with dynamic palette knife techniques, skillfully moving between realism, fine painting, and more expressive approaches. His works span themes from landscapes and architecture to still lifes and in-depth portraits. He conveys the intense sensory experience of reality—his art touches with depth, authenticity, and the desire to capture the essence of life and personality.
"Art and culture, as well as the preservation and perpetuation of traditions, are the primordial soup of a civilization. Art is another form of reality that arises from the perspective of the creator and manifests itself in the eye of the beholder. Not everything is art, but everything can be art."
