About this artwork
Validus (Strong) is part of my Through Salt & Ash series, a body of work that reflects on endurance and transformation. I created this piece after spending time in the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, where I often walked among the towering red rock formations. Their presence felt ancient and knowing—able to hold what I was shedding and return it changed.
In Validus, the stone spire stands as both a witness and a mirror to inner strength.… Through the transfer of my photograph onto wood and the application of reactive iron paint, I invited time, oxidation, and elemental decay to become part of the image itself. The resulting surface feels aged and alive, echoing the way strength can emerge quietly through the process of weathering and surrender.

Brenda Stumpf is a painter, photographer, and sculptor whose self-taught background is infused with experiences from iconography, commercial art, and years of devoted studio practice. She employs abstraction, symbolism, and transformative processes with found and nontraditional materials—such as iron oxide, concrete, and image transfers—layering and weathering her surfaces to evoke the relic-like aura of ancient artifacts. Her works explore memory, mystery, and transformation, resonating with a poignant sense of loss, longing, and the fragile beauty woven through the passage of time.
