This painting is an observation of city life at it's most congested, but even more important, the artist has suggested a sense of isolation one can feel even when surrounded by many other people and the hustle and bustle of inner city life. One of the figures we see here is talking on his mobile phone. it's very unlikely he will know anyone around him, let's imagine he's talking with a loved one, a family member, even a familiar voice on the phone…
is a way of retoring a feeling of belonging, a sence of self and normality.
