About this artwork
Ammonia, formula NH₃. In this sculpture a man is perfectly balanced supporting 3 children. They stretch him, but he sustains them and gives them each enough space. He is Nitrogen, the most abundant element in the earth's atmosphere. He likes to form 3 bonds.
We depend on nitrogen for life, as it is a key part of all proteins. Nitrogen fixing bacteria associated with leguminous plants fix atmospheric gas into ammonia which can then enter the food… cycle. Ammonia is also a step in the excretion of excess Nitrogen from our bodies. It is produced in our livers and quickly converted to urea which can leave the body in a solution.
The sculpture is from the small molecules series which continues Briony Marshall’s works in which human figures are used to represent the atoms in molecules. This tells of how the same few atoms of biological life come together in different ways to produce very different molecules, each fairly simple, but with its own complex stories to tell.

Briony Marshall is a sculptor based in the United Kingdom whose works have been exhibited in England and Italy. Having studied biochemistry in university, she views the world through a scientific lens. In her artistic practice, Marshall explores the parallels from science that help us live in human society. Most of her molecular pieces represent "how people come together to form society, that all life is connected, and that we need each other".
