About this artwork
Briony Marshall uses human figures to represent the atoms in molecules. This tells of how the same few atoms of biological life come together in different ways to produce very different molecules, each fairly simple, but with its own unique story to tell. It also tells of how people come together in society to create complex beautiful systems.
Glucose with its chemical formula C₆H₁₂O₆ is the sugar in your sugar bowl and the most common of the simple… sugars that power biological life. Its high level in our diets is now the source of health worries.
By representing the molecular structure using humans, certain features of it become apparent, the hydroxyl groups, which are the red mother and white baby, form a smooth sweep across the structure. The figures also produce a sweet dance of life.

Briony Marshall is a sculptor based in the United Kingdom whose works have been exhibited in England and Italy. Having studied biochemistry in university, she views the world through a scientific lens. In her artistic practice, Marshall explores the parallels from science that help us live in human society. Most of her molecular pieces represent "how people come together to form society, that all life is connected, and that we need each other".
