About this artwork
Water, molecular formula H₂O, is the most ubiquitous molecule in living organisms. In this sculpture, Briony Marshall has represented the oxygen atom as a female figure holding two children, in the same way that the oxygen atom connects to two small hydrogen atoms.
She is a mother, carefully balancing the needs of her children, they stretch her, but she joyfully sustains them. She is currently defined by them, together they form a unit, water.… Yet they may leave her, and she will still be Oxygen. She may go to work in other molecules and connect to other atoms, but her fundamental nature will remain the same, she always needs to form two bonds. I see this as a metaphor for our lives. We get immersed in different environments and interact with different people, in a workplace, in family life, when we connect with friends. But our fundamental nature remains the same, we still connect to others in the same ways, even if the outcome may appear very different.

Briony Marshall is a sculptor based in the United Kingdom whose works have been exhibited in England and Italy. Having studied biochemistry in university, she views the world through a scientific lens. In her artistic practice, Marshall explores the parallels from science that help us live in human society. Most of her molecular pieces represent "how people come together to form society, that all life is connected, and that we need each other".
