About this artwork
Apollo, god of light, the sun, music, poetry and prophecy, stands at the center of this allegory on the fragility and mortality of great civilizations. A fragmentary head rests precariously atop an Ionic column, suggesting the intervention of some greater, unseen force—one that has both destroyed and deliberately placed it there.
Its scale remains uncertain. We cannot see where it meets the ground, yet it carries a sense of monumentality, especially… in contrast to the small figure in the lower left. This ambiguity deepens the sense of dislocation and loss.
Apollo, playing a lyre, appears to sing a lament, contemplating a landscape of ruined temples, the remnants of a fallen civilization. Music becomes mourning; art becomes memory.
Rendered in a poster-like style, the painting communicates with striking clarity. Its graphic simplicity is suffused with the deep orange glow of a setting sun, evoking both beauty and finality--

Bruce Rauffenbart is a New York artist who studied painting in Philadelphia, Provincetown and Rome, He is an adept figure draughtsman but his painting is mainly abstract. Rauffenbart draws inspiration from the many resources in New York City including the growing gallery scene in his Tribeca neighborhood. His continued travels to Rome, Naples and Sicily have deepened his interest in classical mythology and art history. His painting reimagines these classical sources with inventive, transformative processes radiating an emotional intensity—evoking the primal, passionate, and poetic—expressing the grandeur and vulnerability inherent in myth while also evoking something of our own time.
