About this artwork
This piece called “Guide to Deviltown” combines a cubist sense of space with gestures and marks characteristic of Abstract Expressionism. There are also hints of Surrealism in some of the shapes or gestures that seem to be morphing into animate creatures. The off kilter struggle going on between the architectural & gestural elements give the piece the kinetic energy that forms a kind of narrative that invites the viewer in.

Bruce Rauffenbart is a New York artist who studied painting in Philadelphia, Provincetown and Rome, He is an adept figure draughtsman but his painting is mainly abstract. Rauffenbart draws inspiration from the many resources in New York City including the growing gallery scene in his Tribeca neighborhood. His continued travels to Rome, Naples and Sicily have deepened his interest in classical mythology and art history. His painting reimagines these classical sources with inventive, transformative processes radiating an emotional intensity—evoking the primal, passionate, and poetic—expressing the grandeur and vulnerability inherent in myth while also evoking something of our own time.
