About this artwork
Black Hills derives from a motif of black drips or hill like forms that populate this series of work. Carlson Hatton weaves together methods of paint and gestural markings that initially present as abstraction but offer a notion of recognition upon close inspection. Figures seemingly fuse with the landscape that hosts them.

« Perception is informed by many things that we cannot visualize including sound, memory, and those dominant thoughts and obsessions that occupy our minds, that’s the stuff I want to paint. »
Carlson Hatton is an artist based in the United States whose paintings have been exhibited nationally, as well as in the Netherlands and Australia. One of the recurring themes in his art is a figure in their environment, the overwhelming effects of those surroundings, and the emotional states that we project onto others and our vicinity. Hatton's multi-layered and incredibly detailed vibrant compositions are created using acrylics and relief printing on canvas or wood.
