MacConnell’s paintings have a history within them. She builds layer after layer of mark-making, paint strokes, and glazes, covering and discovering with each layer. This creates richness and depth. Every time you look at this painting, you discover more.
To create her paintings, she starts with… automatic drawing with graphite to activate the canvas. Then a first layer of paint, followed by mark-making, Reacting to what she sees on the canvas, she starts another layer of paint. Turning the canvas to get a different view, another layer is added. Automatic drawing with oil pastels, crayon, charcoal, and graphite is followed by veiling parts and emphasizing other parts. She rotates the canvas again and again until many layers have been added, continually checking for values and composition until the painting is complete.
