About this artwork
I took a trip to New Mexico, which captivated me with its vibrant art and colorful crafts, as well as its deep religious fervor. This inspired me to create a series of 10 female saints who protect either animals, plants, nature, the sea, culture, music, and so on. A saint may be painted multiple times in her various roles. Carole Perret primarily uses tempera on wood, a legacy of extensive training at the School of Applied Arts in Bienne and 40 years of advertising illustration. She adopts a figurative, naive, and precise approach, inspired by the Quattrocento, where symbolism, humor, and vibrant colors tell life stories. Through her mischievous little nuns, harlequins, and circus performers, she questions the harmony between appearance and inner being. Her works exude a childlike joy, a mischievous smile, and invite each of us to question our own inner freedoms.
